Introductory Activity in my ESL Classroom
Biopoem and Google Docs
Writing a Biopoem is a great introductory activity in an ESL classroom. Students write a poem about themselves that uses simple vocabulary. Even beginning students can participate in this activity and you can display it in the classroom as a sample of student work.
In my class, students write their final draft of the poem on Google Docs. Google Docs automatically saves their work and ensures that it is shared with the teacher. They can add images to represent themselves and be creative with fonts and colors.
Here is the outline of the poem that I use in my class (reference is unknown):
HOW TO CREATE A BIO-POEM
LINE 1 – YOUR FIRST NAME
LINE 2 – FOUR TRAITS THAT DESCRIBE YOU
LINE 3 – SON/DAUGHTER OF
LINE 4 – BROTHER OR SISTER OF
LINE 5 – LOVER OF (3 THINGS, IDEAS, ACTIVITIES OR PEOPLE)
LINE 6 – WHO FEELS (3 THINGS)
LINE 7 – WHO NEEDS (3 THINGS)
LINE 8 – WHO GIVES (3 THINGS)
LINE 9 – WHO FEARS (3 THINGS)
LINE 10 – WHO WOULD LIKE TO (3 THINGS)
LINE 11 – BORN IN ______________
LINE 12 – LIVED IN ______________
LINE 13 – BIRTHDAY

Here are some examples of biopoems that my students created in their class. After you print a hard copy, students can draw pictures, glue different objects and get even more creative!
